What's new:
- Publishers'
Page of Shame
The author says, "This is a collaborative list of new books purchased
by public, school and academic Libraries in the United States that have
fallen apart almost immediately upon release into circulation. It is
my intent to collect data from as many libraries as are willing to create
something tangible to show the publishing industry. Paying between $20-$30
for a book that is poorly manufactured is unacceptable and borders on
fraud."
- Measure
4 Measure
A collection of links to web sites that perform calculations for you.
The sites can "estimate, calculate, evaluate and translate."
Some examples include: loan payment calculators, heat index calculators,
calorie calculators, fertilizer calculators, and fruit conversions (so
you can compare apples and oranges).
- Based
on the Book
Mid-Continent Public Library's compilation of selected books that have
been made into movies.
- JigZone
A good place for computer newbies to have fun while getting used to
using a mouse.
- FictionDB
Over 1,000 authors and 7,000 titles in romance, westerns and mysteries.
Searchable by author, where in addition to a list of titles, you may
get pseudonyms under which the author wrote other works.
- Knots
Animated images to teach the intricacies of the sheepshank, clove hitch,
and Windsor tie knot.
- ABEBooks.com
Your patrons can search for out-of-print books at over 9000 independent
book dealers, and your library
can create an account too.
- If you like SOAR,
try AllRecipes.com.
- LibrarySupportstaff.com

After today, how to
keep up on what's new:
What's fun:
Sites I absolutely
couldn't live without:
- Mind-It
"Is there a web page you visit to stay informed of changes to information
and content? Mind-it will watch this page for you and email when you
when relevant changes occur." Here's a sample
e-mail notice.
Update: Just after my FVLC presentation
Mind-it changed from a free service to one that charges a $19.95 annual
fee. Here are some services that are similar to Mind-It that are free
(but I haven't tried any of them yet):
- LISNews
My favorite site to keep up on current events and news in the library
world. It's updated throughout the day.
- Librarians'
Index to the Internet
Their motto: "Information You Can Trust." It's a "searchable, annotated
subject directory of more than 8,600 Internet resources selected and
evaluated by librarians for their usefulness to users of public libraries."
- LLRX
(Law Library Resource Xchange): Presentations and Training Articles
Marie Wallace's monthly articles with titles like "Room Setups
for Presentations & Training - One Size Does NOT Fit All", "Voice
Care for the Occasional Speaker" and "Twelve Sure Fire Ways
to Torpedo Your Presentations".
- Tucows
Over 30,000 freeware and shareware software titles for download + reviews
("Head of the Herd", "Pick of the Pasture")
