E-Mail Tip O' The Month

Viewing images in email in SquirrelMail

For those of you using SquirrelMail, you may have noticed that it likes to hide images in messages. The people who have developed SquirrelMail say they do this on purpose. If you're interested why, go here. To turn all those back on, click on Options at the top. Within there, click on Unsafe Image Rules. Within there, check the box next to Trust all sources: and click on Save. Now, all images will be viewed by default.

Mozilla:

Mozilla Custom Keywords are useful for making shorthand for bookmarks and also for searches and queries. Simple Custom Keywords allow you to type a short string in the URL bar and load it's corresponding Bookmark URL. To set a keyword you must first create a bookmark for the URL. You can do this by visiting the site and using the Bookmark | Add Current Page (Ctrl + D), or you can go to the Manage Bookmarks window (Ctrl + B) and create a new bookmark with File | New Bookmark. After you have created the bookmark, you can add a keyword to the bookmark in the Bookmark Properties window (Edit | Properties, Ctrl + i, or contextmenu Properties). In the Bookmark Properties window simply add a short string to the Custom Keyword field. Now close that dialog and you can type the keyword in the address bar, hit enter and it will load that URL.

An example I have is the bookmark for http://email.winnefox.org to which I've added the keyword "email". So with that set I can type email in the address bar and it loads http://email.winnefox.org. Keywords combined with autocomplete in Mozilla I seldom type more than about three or four characters for all of the sites I regularly visit.

Custom Keywords can also be used to create shortcuts for your favorite search engines. Here's how it works.

I'll use a Google search as an example.

  • Bookmark http://www.google.com
  • Give the bookmark a keyword like "goog"
  • Restart Mozilla (seems to be necessary on some but not others, not sure why).
  • Now typing "goog gollum" in the address bar will search Google for "Gollum".

Internet Explorer:
Go to a new web site without using your mouse
To open a new website without using your mouse, press Ctrl and L on your keyboard. This will open a dialog box. Type your address, such as www.google.com and press enter. Now your browser will open that site.

Windows/Office Tip O' The Month

Question: I have tried to send JPG pictures. When people get them they are too large to view.

Answer: When people e-mail photos to friends and family without adjusting the pictures, the photos are much larger than our monitors and we have to scroll around to see the rest of it, but not with it entirely fitting on our screen. Those on slow connections have to wait a long time for such files to download into their Inboxes. As a courtesy and to make the photo viewable without scrolling, resizing the image is the way to go.

Microsoft Photo Editor comes with Microsoft Office, and you can use it to resize a photo in the following manner:

Click Start | Programs | Microsoft Office Tools | Microsoft Photo Editor. (If you can't find Microsoft Photo Editor, load your Office CD and install it.)
Open the photo(s) you want to send by clicking File | Open and browsing for the photo.
Select Image | Resize.
Adjust the height and width values or percentages to change the size. Leave the "Allow Distortion" box unchecked to ensure the resized image retains its original proportions, otherwise the photo will look warped or funky.
Save your resized image; you may want to change the file name so you don't copy over the original. Now, you're ready to e-mail the newly resized photo.

A Google tip for searching your favorite catalogs:

Google has a neat new feature. Catalogs. This allows you to search many catalogs simultaneously. When you perform a search, the results are shown as the catalog pages.
