E-Mail Tip O' The Month
I've taken all of your requests, and I have found an alternative web-based email client. (only available to those with e-mail accounts here at Winnefox.) It's called Squirrelmail. I've been working hard to get it ready for this issue of the Ides. It's fully functional, but for now it only works at Winnefox-member library's workstations. I'm working on making it accessible to library staff from any PC (from home, from conferences, etc.) -- I'll send out an e-mail as soon as it's ready from anywhere. In the meantime, please go to: http://onslaught and let me know what you think. This is your opportunity to let me know the features you would like to see added. Please note, this is still in a testing phase, so there may be some down time. There are instructions on that page for how to log on.

Here is a small list of things it can do:

  • can view and select from Global Address List
  • eliminates pop up password box
  • message composer has a spell checker
  • very clean interface
  • ability to view all messages in a folder
  • printable version of messages
  • customizable interface including different themes and weather reports
  • ability to sort messages within folders
  • displays all available folders
  • online help (displays help dependent on which section you are in)
  • much more intuitive and easier to navigate
  • works in any browser
  • for people who only use web mail, it offers things like a shared calendar and notes
Internet Tip O' The Month
Last month I showed you how to download and install a web browser named Mozilla. Now I will show you one of the main reasons I use it -- eliminating pop-up ads!

To eliminate pop-up ads, follow these steps:

  1. Open Mozilla, go to the Edit menu, and select Preferences.
  2. Click the Advanced menu and then Scripts & Plugins.
  3. In this section, uncheck the box that says Open unrequested windows.
  4. Click OK.

Now, you won't be getting any more of those annoying popup ads.

For Internet Explorer users, here's a tip for you:
If the text in Internet Explorer is too small, you can change it. To do this, just go to Views and scroll down to Text Size. From the list of largest to smallest, choose medium or higher to prevent eyestrain.

Windows/Office Tip O' The Month

Undo mistakes by using Control "Z."

You can undo just about anything in your software by simply pressing the keyboard's Ctrl key and Z key at the same time. It works great in word processing documents and in Windows. Say you accidentally dragged an icon to the Desktop -- just press Control "Z" and watch the icon disappear.

Useful URL O' The Month

Here is a useful site from our friends at Google:
http://news.google.com

In the words of Google, "Google News presents information culled from approximately 4,000 news sources worldwide and automatically arranged to present the most relevant news first."
It's a great all around news site.

Fun URL O' The Month

Here is yet another very fun, extremely addicting game to play on your off hours called Word Stalk.
How high of a score can you get?

Quote O' The Month

"An optimist is a person who starts a new diet on Thanksgiving Day."

Recipe O' The Month

Here's something good for all that leftover turkey we'll have from Thanksgiving: Turkey Tacos.

And if you've got ingredients on hand but are at a loss for what to cook, try "Googlecooking"!
