E-Mail Tip O' The Month

The default setting for Microsoft Outlook is to display only the menu items and buttons you use most often. When you first begin using Outlook the most basic commands appear, but as you use Outlook more it adapts the menus and toolbars to fit your habits. An item is dropped from the short version of a menu if you use Outlook many times without using that command. If you want to expand a menu to see the full list of options, click the arrow bar screenshot of an arrow bar for an Outlook menu at the bottom of each unexpanded menu.

If you'd rather see all menu choices all the time, you can change Outlook's settings so you always see the full list of options. Here's how to customize Outlook to do just that:

  1. Open Outlook (click the Windows Start button, click Programs, and then click Microsoft Outlook.)

  2. On Outlook's menu bar click on Tools, and then Customize:

  3. Click the checkmark next to "Menus show recently used commands first" to take the checkmark away:

  4. Click the Close button

Internet Tip O' The Month

Now that more staff at Winnefox libraries are accessing their Outlook e-mail accounts via the web, lots more people are using Internet Explorer as a web browser. If you're someone who's used to using Netscape instead, here's a way to find out some of the differences between Netscape and Internet Explorer:

  1. Open IE

  2. Click "Help" on the IE menu bar

  3. Click "For Netscape Users" on the Help menu:

In particular, one section you might find helpful is "Compare terms in Navigator and Internet Explorer: If you've used Navigator in the past, you may find that words for common actions or features are different in Internet Explorer."

Windows/Office Tip O' The Month

Just like Outlook customization hint in this month's E-Mail Tip above, you can do the same in other MS Office products like Word and Excel. For example, if you'd rather see all menu choices all the time in Word so you always see the full list of options, follow these steps:

  1. Open Word

  2. On the menu bar click Tools, and then click Customize

  3. Click the checkmark next to "Menus show recently used commands first" to take the checkmark away:

  4. Click the Close button.

Are you planning to see the new "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" film being released on the 19th? Read a behind-the-scenes look from a school librarian who was an extra on the film -- he even played two characters on both sides of the same battle (a Gondorian soldier and an Orc).
