E-MAIL TIP Do you subscribe to electronic newsletters that are also published on the Web, like the Scout Report or Current Cites? Do you find that receiving these newsletter clutters up your Inbox because you haven't found the time to read them? But you wonder if you unsubscribe, how will you remember to check the web site on a regular basis? Maybe you'd like to try using Netmind instead. You can ask Netmind to keep track of the web sites that you choose. Then Minder Wizard will automagically send you an e-mail message letting you know when the site has been updated or changed. Since you'll only be receiving a notice instead of the actual newsletter, your electronic mailbox will be receiving a much smaller message --anywhere from 10 to 20 times smaller than the actual newsletter itself, which means your Inbox will be smaller too. This way you can feel less guilt when you let a message sit in your Inbox a while before you get a chance to follow up on it! And now for something completely different, read about The First Recorded Virus Warning.
When you've been surfing the Internet with Netscape, here are 6 different ways to return to a web page you've been to before:
In last month's Ides I offered a link to tips for taming a misbehaving mouse, but if it's sticky keys that are giving you a problem, read How To Kleen Your Keyboard. They don't usually need maintenance, but if you've got a key that sticks you can try some of the simple techniques offered. And here's the (not so) official news regarding the release date for the new "Windows 2000" operating system.
There are only 31 days left before the April 15th deadline for filing tax forms, so you may find the Internal Revenue Service's tax forms and publications web site to be of value to your patrons. You can search for a form or publication by keyword or form number, and download forms and publications for the current year as well as forms used as far back as 1992. The Wisconsin Department of Revenue also has tax forms and publications available on its web site. In addition, if your patron needs a form from any other state you can visit the IRS's Gateway to State Tax Forms. In order to view or print many of the forms, instructions and publications on these web sites you'll need to make sure your web browser has the free Adobe Acrobat Reader (it's easy to download and install).
Has the Y2K mania gone too far? Take a look at the (actual) products available at Sanyo and a wonderful parody.
