E-Mail Tip

Creating new folders to organize e-mail messages is a much better alternative to letting messages pile up in your "inbox" folder. Even though most e-mail software comes with the basic folders (inbox, sentmail, etc.), here's how to create your own message folders, using the two e-mail software packages supported by Winnefox.

Netscape Communicator 4.51:
1. At the menu bar at the very top of the screen click on "File", and then choose "New Folder"
2. In the small window that pops up, type a name for the new folder
3. If the entry for "Create as subfolder of" is "Local Mail", just click the OK button. Otherwise, click the small arrow next to the "Create as subfolder of" field and click once on "Local Mail" and click the OK button.

Now you can begin saving message to your new folder! You can click and drag messages into e-mail folders, or click the "File" button on Netscape Messenger's button bar.

Pine:
Creating folders in Pine is easy -- when you want to file a message in a new folder just press the S key and type in the name of the folder you'd like to create. Just remember that Pine is case sensitive, so try not to create folders named "badgerlink", "Badgerlink", and "BADGERLINK".

When in Pine you can see a list of all the folders you have just by pressing the L key. The special folders for "inbox", "sentmail" and "mail" will appear at the top of the list, and all the rest are in alphabetical order. The folder list screen displays the names of all your Pine folders and allows you to view (open), rename, delete, and add folders. You can open a folder by highlighting the folder name (using the arrow keys) and pressing the return or enter key.

If you're in one folder but want to read messages in another folder, you can jump directly there by pressing the G (as in "go") key without having to use the Folder List display.

Internet Tip

Is there a Web site you use every day? Or do you have a favorite search engine or directory that gets your surfing off to a good start? If so, maybe changing your Web browser's start page will help you out...

In Netscape 4.51 follow these steps:
1. Surf over to the Web page of your choice
2. On Netscape's menu bar click on "Edit" and "Preferences"
3. In the Preferences window that has popped up, under "Navigator Starts With", select "Home Page"
4. Under Home Page, click the "Use Current Page"
5. Click the "OK" button, and you're all set!

If you don't use Netscape 4.51 check The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Surfers: Set Your Start-Up Page for instructions on changing the home page in your flavor of Web browser.

Windows Tip

A handy way to improve your use of Windows 95 or Windows NT is to automagically have the Windows Tip of the Day open each time you start up your PC.

Just follow these steps:
1. Click the Start button on your Taskbar
2. Click "Help"
3. There are 3 tabs -- Contents, Index, and Find -- click "Contents"
4. Double-click "Tips and Tricks"
5. Double-click "Tips of the Day"
6. Double-click "Viewing the Welcome Screen"
7. Click the arrow button to open the Welcome Screen Tip.

8. Click the box next to "Show this Welcome Screen next time you start Windows". You can also click the "Next Tip" button to cycle through all of the tips.

Now you're on your way to becoming more savvy about Windows every day!

And this press release just in:
Redmond, WA (API) --- Microsoft announced today that the official release date for the new operating system "Windows 2000" will be delayed until the second quarter of 1901.

SpeechBot is an experimental directory of popular US radio shows that performs free text searches of audio text. This means you can use it to find the interview of your favorite author that your friend heard on the radio last week, or catch the entire radio program you only heard the end of when you got into your car yesterday.

Yes Virginia, the North American Aerospace Defense Command does have a sense of humor -- the Annual NORAD Tracks Santa Claus Web site will be giving live updates on Santa's trip around the world on December 24th. In addition, NORAD also provides information on Santa and Y2K, reassuring us that since "Santa is no stranger to millennium rollovers" since "it is likely that his experience during the Y1K transition period prepared him for our current Y2K challenges."
