E-MAIL TIP

Here's a time-saver for those of you who use Pine as your email reader. Whenever you get an email message from someone whom you'd like to add to your email address book, simply press the T key and Pine will prompt you with a message "Enter new nickname (one word and easy to remember)." Give the person a nickname, and Pine will prompt you to enter the new entry's "Full Name (Last, First)." Pine will give you a chance to edit the new e-mail address, but it probably doesn't need any tweaking, so you can press the Enter key to add the new address to your Pine address book.

If you want to grab one email address from a message that has multiple addresses in the header, Pine will ask you if you want to go into "[Single mode: Use "P" or "N" to select desired address]", and you can then press the N or down arrow key to highlight the name you want to add, or you can use P or the up arrow to scroll up the list of addresses. When you've highlighted the address you want to add, press the Enter key to "take" the address.

INTERNET TIP

Everyone has his or her favorite way of moving around within software. Using graphical web browsers such as Netscape and Internet Explorer, most of us are familiar with moving around entirely with the mouse. However, a mouse click isn't always the quickest way to navigate on the Web. Many standard browser functions are also available through keystroke equivalents.

The May 1998 Online magazine article Web Browser Keyboard and Navigation Shortcuts deals mostly with Netscape's Communicator and Navigator version 4, running on Windows 95, but many of the tricks and shortcuts also work on Internet Explorer. Most work just the same under Windows 3.1. Mac users should use the apple key rather than the Ctrl key. Others of you may want to go to Netscape 3.03 Tips 'n Stuff.

Keyboard shortcuts may not appeal to everyone, but knowing what's available gives you the option for alternate ways to navigate. Some of them may actually be essential for moving around the Web when the mouse freezes, but some can even speed up regular Web browsing. Give them a try to find the ones fit best into your style of Web use.

A favorite shortcut of mine is to set bookmarks with a Ctrl+d. I like this shortcut because I've still got my right hand on the mouse, and can use my left hand to quickly set a bookmark...and keep right on surfing.

WINDOWS 95 TIP

Do you share a computer with co-workers? If so, here's a way to create user profiles, making it possible for different users to share the same computer and for each user to keep his or her own settings. In IDG's Thanks for Sharing you'll find out how to set up user profiles for each person who uses the PC.

USEFUL URL O' THE MONTH

KidsClick is a "web guide and search tool for kids by librarians." You can search KidsClick for a topic, and limit by reading levels (all, up to grade 2, grade 3-6, and grade 7 +), and also limit by the amount of illustrations (some or no pictures, some pictures, or many pictures).

KidsClick was initiated under a Federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant obtained by the Ramapo Catskill Library System. KidsClick was created by a group of librarians at RCLS, "as a logical step in addressing concerns about the role of public libraries in guiding their young users to valuable and age appropriate web sites."

But just for grins, try the UltimateMegaSuperExcellentSearcher. This search engine will help you locate that friend that owes you $50, the remote control, or the meaning of life (no, it's not 42.)

FUN URL O' THE MONTH

Did your computer crash again? Does Tech Support recognize your voice? Are you asking, "Who is General Protection Fault, and why is he in my computer?" If you need a pick-me-up, head on over to the byte-ing humor of The 5th Wave cartoons by Rich Tennant. You may recognize his cartoons from the ...for Dummies series of computer books. Now you can see a Fifth Wave comic strip each day and view past Fifth Wave cartoons from his archive. His cartoons focus on "the way people interact with computers instead of on the computers themselves."

You may need to look at the cartoon to get "I wish someone would explain to Professor Jones that you don't need a whip and a leather jacket to find a lost file."
