E-MAIL TIP E-mail folders are simply files where messages are kept. Every e-mail message is in a folder. Pine users with accounts at Winnefox start out with some pre-made folders: "inbox", "sentmail", and a default folder for saved messages simply named "mail". You may create other folders as you need them. Just remember that Pine is case sensitive, so you might accidentally save messages in folders named "badgerlink", "Badgerlink", and "BADGERLINK". Just as you can save a message from your Inbox to any other folder by pressing the S key, you can also save messages from any other folder to another. This is handy if you realize that (oops) you've got some messages in a "Badgerlink" folder that you'd like to move to the "badgerlink" folder! When in Pine you can see a list of all the folders you have just by pressing the L key. The special folders for "inbox", "sentmail" and "mail" will appear at the top of the list, and all the rest are in alphabetical order. The folder list screen displays the names of all your Pine folders and allows you to view (open), rename, delete, and add folders. You can open a folder by highlighting the folder name (using the arrow keys) and pressing the return or enter key. If you're in one folder but want to read messages in another folder, you can jump directly there by pressing the G (as in "go") key without having to use the Folder List display. If you use e-mail software other than Pine, folder creation and maintenance techniques will vary. If you use Netscape 3.x's e-mail application, consult the Netscape Handbook: Mail, News, and Bookmarks. For all others, consult the software Help documentation. If you have a hard time reading your screen because the text is too small, do you know that web browsers allow you to change the font size and style for the text displayed on your screen? In Netscape 3.x's menu bar, click on Options | General | Preferences | Fonts | Choose Font and use the Size scrollbar to choose a larger point size. You can view the changes in the Sample window -- try changing the size and style to find the one that works best for you. However, according to Access by Design's Tips For Using The Internet, "if you increase the size of the font too much, you may see unusual word wrap." If you use Netscape 4.x, click on Edit | Preferences | Appearance | Fonts. Internet Explorer 3.x has a handy "font" button on its toolbar - clicking it increases the font size as you're viewing a page. When using IE 4 click on View | Fonts | Largest or Larger.
In addition, a web page known simply as Large
Print allows you to display any mid-sized page of text in large print
without having to reconfigure your web browser.
In last month's Ides I mentioned a disk-maintenance utility called Defragmenter (I hope you got a chance to defrag your PC's disk drive since then!) This month I'll talk about another one known as ScanDisk. ScanDisk examines your PC's hard disk and corrects errors caused by wayward applications and quirks in file structure. Many of the problems that ScanDisk can detect and fix may improve your PC's hard disk performance. Located in Windows 95 under Programs | Accessories | System Tools, ScanDisk can find errors in the folder/directory table, repair cross-linked files, and detect disk surface defects. If you've already saved a file in a bad area, ScanDisk can relocate the readable clusters of that file to a good section of the disk As with Defragmenter, you should run ScanDisk periodically to help keep your PC free from disk errors. Lisa M. Bartle, Reference/User Education Librarian at the Lima Regional Campus of Ohio State University, has compiled the Database of Award-winning Children's Literature. The books that are listed have won awards ranging from the Caldecott Award to ALA Notable Books for Children to the Coretta Scott King Award. Books which have received Honorable Mentions are included as well. You can find high quality book titles by keyword or phrase searching, or by using a form to indicate the reading level, genre, language, historical period, gender of the protagonist, and ethnicity of the protagonist. You can create a reading list of books based on your criteria, or simply view lists of children's literature awards. Still have a few more people on your holiday gift list? Look no further than Nikki's AOL CD Present Collection for ideas on turning those free CD-ROMs into crafty gifts! (You owe it to yourself just to take a look at the Nativity Scene). Nikki also offers handy tips for turning AOL diskettes into a clock, a photo frame, and a hanging potpourri holder. Grab that gold spray paint and doilies, and warm up those glue guns now! is Lorraine's Sugar Cookies. Lorraine Cederholm is planning to retire as director of Princeton Public Library, but we snagged one of her famous recipes before she could get away! And if you're looking for even more holiday
